The Ultimate Guide to Rock Lights

Wed, August 13, 2025

Bliauto offers expert insight into rock lights, helping you choose, install, and enjoy the perfect setup for off-road adventures, camping, and ambient lighting.

What are rock lights?

Rock lights are small but powerful lights installed beneath your vehicle to illuminate the ground directly underneath it. As the name implies, they’ve earned their fame among off-road enthusiasts, especially those who brave rocky trails, muddy terrain, and dark forest paths long after sunset. These lights help drivers spot obstacles like rocks, tree roots, or sudden dips—turning nighttime crawling into a safer, more confident adventure.

While “rock lights” is the most popular term, you’ll often hear other names tossed around at the trailhead or in off-road forums—like courtesy lights, underglow lights, and puddle lights. Each has its roots in different driving cultures, from off-road utility to street-style flair. Most rock lights use a flood beam pattern, designed to cast a wide blanket of light over the terrain beneath and around your vehicle, rather than focusing on distance. It’s all about visibility where you need it most—right under your wheels.

Rock lights are useful in many ways

Driver visibility

Rock lights are, of course, great for driving at night in a Jeep, but people only see them from the perspective of the driver. They are invaluable when crawling along technical ground where tyre placement is critical and progress is slow. Put your arm or head out of the window and look down with the rock lights on to see exactly what you need to.

Spotter visibility

When placed in the right location, rock lights can also be used to illuminate other areas under your vehicle, helping your spotter to see better and providing them with the information needed to guide you safely through the trail. Forward-facing lights can blind the person in front of your vehicle who is trying to guide you, so turning off the forward-facing lights and turning on your rock lights can improve the experience for everyone.

Ambient/camp scene lighting

However, rock crawling is not the only situation in which such lights are useful. In fact, I have other uses for these lights besides driving on tough trails at night. Rock lights are also excellent for setting up camp in the dark because they light up an enclosed space around the vehicle for about 10 feet.

These underglow/rock lights are helpful in random situations due to the ambient light they emit. For example, you could use them to light up your driveway when unloading groceries late at night, or wire them into your interior cab lights to create puddle lights that activate when you open your doors. These lights are as versatile as your imagination.

Pros and cons of rock lights

When it comes to rock lights installed on off-road rigs, there are several key benefits to having them, but also two drawbacks.

Advantages of rock lights in brief:

  • Night off-road driving
  • Obstacle avoidance

Very tough for the roughest roads

They can be connected as courtesy lights when the doors open.

Multi-purpose applications, including as camping lights, rock lights and area lights.

Low power consumption (~5W per light).

And, honestly...? They also look cool!

The drawbacks of rock lights

We won't make this section as long as some of our other articles, since the limitations and disadvantages of rock lights are actually quite few! The main disadvantage is that they can be time-consuming to wire. When wiring them, you are usually under the vehicle in tight spaces. You also want to run all the wires neatly and out of the way so that there is no chance of them getting snagged on anything when off-roading, and you need to run lots of wires to power the rock lights.

It can also be difficult to find a good mounting solution for the lights themselves, depending on what you are mounting them onto. This isn't too much of a bother on Jeeps and trucks, but it may be more difficult when installing lights on a UTV. However, flush mounts, surface mounts and magnetic mounts can all make life much easier when mounting! Also, there are occasions when you might not have mounting points at the desired angle.

Different ways to mount rock lights:

Bolt-on mounts

Bolt-on mounts are one of the most secure and reliable methods for installing rock lights. This method involves physically screwing the lights into your vehicle’s frame, wheel wells, or undercarriage using brackets or mounting plates. It’s ideal for off-roaders who need maximum durability in rugged terrain, as the lights are firmly attached and less likely to shift or fall off during rough rides.

Magnetic mounts

Undoubtedly, the most convenient method of installing rock lights is to use magnetic mounts. The rock lights attach to a powerful neodymium magnet, allowing them to be placed anywhere on a steel frame, cage or body. These robust magnets will stay put when being bashed in the whoops or hammered in the rocks.

Flush and Surface Mounts

Flush and surface mounts are perfect for those seeking a clean, professional look when installing rock lights on a UTV, Jeep interior, or truck bumper. Flush mounts keep the lights tucked away for better protection, while surface mounts slightly protrude but feature a ramped edge that helps deflect rocks and debris. Both styles offer a sleek, polished finish—especially ideal when mounting in visible areas—while ensuring durability and style go hand in hand.

Where should rock lights be placed on a Jeep, UTV or truck?

The location and mounting of rock lights on an off-road vehicle is pretty much the same, regardless of whether it is a Jeep, a UTV or a truck. The most important factors are the length of the vehicle and how many lights you need to achieve your desired effect. With that in mind, here are some general guidelines on where to place rock lights, as well as where you might want to add more in future.

Required:

When installing a complete rock light kit on your Jeep or other off-road vehicle, you will usually have six lights in total to work with. Some lights have add-on kits that enable you to add more lights for more advanced set-ups that require greater coverage, but we will discuss where to install these later. In the meantime, we will start at the front of the vehicle and work our way to the back. It is also advisable to position them symmetrically on the driver and passenger sides of the vehicle.

On the front, two lights are to be placed in front of the front tires on both sides of the car. They may be on a front-most part of the frame, under a front bumper, and so on.

Then, install two additional lights behind the front tires.

Lastly, the other two lights should be positioned in front of the rear tires.

This arrangement is the most practical rock light mounting points of off-roading at night in the entire area of coverage. As a driver, all you actually need to see is the light behind the front wheel and in front of the rear wheel. The two lights in the very front will be welcome to your spotter so that he can keep you on the right line.

The serious wheelers:

If you are a hard-core off-roader, you may want to have more than 6 rock lights. The best way to begin would be to complete the overall coverage by including two more lights behind the rear tires. Anything more than that is going to be where you need some extra fill or just to get some extra points! Add two more in the middle of the car to get more coverage, or wherever you may find it useful.

RGB rock lights and single-colour white LEDs with coloured lenses

A frequently asked question that we receive here at Bliauto is what the difference is between colour-changing RGB rock lights and lights that are just one colour. While not very complicated, it is worth discussing. Overall, single-colour LED lights (those that cannot change colour using an app) will be brighter and offer more usable light. They are available with coloured lenses that regulate the colour output, resulting in a very pure colour.

RGB lights have LEDs consisting of three coloured dies in a single package: red, green and blue. These individual dies are smaller and are not built to produce light as bright as larger single-colour LEDs. They are used at different brightness levels to produce a full range of colours through an app or other controller. Another drawback of these lights is that colours other than red, green or blue will not be as crisp as single-colour lights, where the output colour is controlled by a coloured lens. Thus, the white of an RGB light may contain blue. However, the advantage of RGB rock lights is that you can change the colour to suit your personal style or situation. For example, you might use white while setting up camp and then switch to red afterwards to avoid attracting insects.

FAQs

Are rock lights waterproof and durable enough for off-road use?

Yes, high-quality rock lights are built to be IP67 or IP68 waterproof, dustproof, and shock-resistant. They’re designed to handle rough terrain, mud, rain, snow, and high-pressure cleaning. Look for models made with aluminum housing and sealed wiring for maximum durability.

How many rock lights do I need for my vehicle?

A basic setup includes 4 lights (one per wheel well), while more advanced configurations use 6, 8, or even 12 lights for full underbody coverage. The number depends on your vehicle size and the visual effect you want to achieve.

What colors are available for rock lights?

Rock lights are available in single-color (white, blue, red, green) or RGB multicolor versions. RGB kits offer millions of colors and effects that can be adjusted via remote or app, ideal for show cars or events.

Do rock lights drain the battery?

LED rock lights use very little power, so battery drain is minimal if used properly. However, if left on for long periods while the engine is off, they can eventually discharge the battery. It’s recommended to wire them with a switch or connect them to ignition power.

What’s the difference between RGB and RGBW rock lights?

RGB rock lights combine red, green, and blue LEDs to create a variety of colors. RGBW rock lights include an additional pure white LED, delivering better brightness and a true white tone, ideal for both functional and aesthetic lighting.
